2023: The Year of Transition in Residential Heating

This year marks the beginning of a significant shift in residential heating—comparable to the introduction of neighborhood natural gas distribution. The term “heat pump” is now becoming a familiar option for Toronto homeowners seeking to reduce fossil fuel use.

Government rebates introduced on January 1, 2023, provide up to $6,500 for qualifying heat pump systems. While all-electric heat pumps work well in homes with lower heating requirements, most practical and widely available solutions are gas-electric hybrid systems. In these setups, the heat pump serves as the primary stage of heating, with gas equipment stepping in as needed.

Hybrid Heat Pump Solutions

• Central Air-to-Air Heat Pumps: These replace outdoor central air conditioners and act as the first heating stage, paired with a gas furnace in forced-air systems.

• Ductless Air-to-Air Heat Pumps: These can operate alongside existing furnaces or boilers, serving as a practical transition system toward an all-electric—or potentially hydrogen—future.

Considerations for Boiler Systems
For homes with boiler systems, air-to-water heat pumps are still emerging and may not yet match the capacity of a typical natural gas boiler. In smaller homes, all-electric boilers have been successfully installed, but for most homes, ductless heat pumps paired with an existing natural gas boiler are the best interim solution while waiting for more advanced options to enter the market.
